Pumping Iron Better Than Popping Iron

Just recently a review of over 121 clinical trials concluded that weight lifting 2-3 times per week benefit the elderly well into their 80's!

Weight lifting provides a means of increasing strength which deteriorates with age.

Although it is difficult to imagine a bicep-bulging weight lifter shuffling down the hallways of a retirement home, we must remember that the goal is not to bulk up; it is to increase strength.

I personally feel that free weights might be a little to advanced for the beginning senior-weightlifter, so that is why elastic resistance bands are seen as a great way to 'lift weights'. Their costs are nominal, their storage space is minute, and their benefits are essential. After all, who wouldn't want to climb stairs, open jars, or hug a loved one with ease? Read more here

Thoughts

Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art.
- Stanislaw Lec

Sure we all remember when our bodies and minds were young; however, just think of what we have all become. If any factor in our life we're different, we'd be different. We are the product of every decision and action. No two people are alike, but as we age, we become even more unique from our peers.

I would like to get some thoughts on this quote and what it means to you--

Article on Emma Shulman: A gerontologist at N.Y.U. Langone Medical Center

Here is a great article on Emma Shulman.

"She Knows a Thing or Two About Aging"
Published: July 7, 2009
Emma Shulman has been a gerontologist, social worker and Alzheimer’s researcher for many years. She is also 96.

'The incurable optimist'

Who better to ask about aging then from a person who has done it herself!
A great article for anyone who is interested in issues on Alzheimer's disease, memory loss, weight, breaking old habits, etc.

My favorite thing about this lady is the fact that she is always learning. She is taking her masters because she believes that learning is one way to slow aging. Learning can never stop, but it can stagnate. All-to-often we can be quoted as saying: 'I know more than you, I've been around longer!" Knowledge is more then just experience. Knowledge is a mental exercise. Not any less important than the physical exercise we are more familiar with.

Learn everyday. Take up a new hobby, study a subject and be an expert. Read and/or listen to all the books you can! Fool your brain into thinking you're younger than you are! You can teach and old dog new tricks! Try it!

Great Quote!

I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am.

- Francis Bacon

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to have a great attitude on life. Optimism not only makes you a more pleasant person, but it prevents someone from stress. Do you know anyone who is mean and bitter and free from stress? Let me know if you find that person.

Although Francis Bacon lived to be just 65 years old, not too bad considering the life expectancy in Elizabethan England was 47 years for men!
